Providing continuity and compatibility for European ITS architecture
To obtain the maximum benefits from ITS and ensure that systems are compatible across sectors and in different countries, a pan-European approach is needed.
Filling this function is the European ITS Framework Architecture, which provides guidelines and a common approach for the planning, development and implementation of ITS throughout Europe. Focusing mainly on road-based ITS applications, it covers eight major functional areas: electronic payment facilities, safety and emergency facilities, freight and fleet operations, traffic management, public transport operations, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), traveller journey assistance and support for law enforcement. The Framework Architecture is intended to function as a “toolbox” from which other ITS architectures and systems specifications can be developed.
The task of promoting the Framework Architecture and providing practical assistance to users was carried out by the FRAME projects until autumn 2004. This legacy has since been taken up and progressed by the FRAME Forum.
Objectives
- Update the European ITS Framework Architecture to provide better coverage of services in the areas of multimodal freight and fleet management/operations, distance-based road user charging and any additional public transport services implied by TRANSMODEL V5 (the reference data model for public transport operations).
- Define the meaning of the statement: “This ITS architecture is compliant with the European ITS Framework Architecture” and assess its impact on ITS architecture development.
- Publicise information about best practice ITS architectures within the EU.
- Assess how existing national architectures have benefited from a pan-European architecture and analyse the issues that were raised when the systems were implemented.
Forum Members
Coordinated by ERTICO and chaired by the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, the Forum Board currently includes five members representing the transport ministries from the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, France and Austria, and Sweden as an associate member. The Forum is open to all public and private organisations that have an interest in ITS architecture development.
