Policy

At political level the most recent steps related to eCall have been:

The inclusion of eCall in the ITS Action Plan and ITS Directive.

In December 2008 the commission adopted the ITS Action Plan in which the support of the eCall deployment is one of the actions, and at the same time an ITS Directive proposal which provides for a legal instrument to impose measures to the Member States, notably for the “harmonised introduction of pan-European eCall”.

The European Commission 4th communication “eCall: Time for deployment”

In August 2009 the European Commission issued the 4th communication on eCall in which “the Commission proposes measures to accelerate the introduction of eCall as part of the equipment of all new vehicles in Europe”.

The communication also announces that, if the “voluntary approach” “does not meet the objective of introducing the eCall service in Europe, the Commission will consider introducing in 2010 new regulatory measures for making the eCall system standard in new type-approved vehicles in Europe, to bring down the cost of the systems and to ensure it is deployed in all European countries”.
