Georg Obert given first ever TISA Achievement Award 2011

Lyon, 10/6/2011, TISA (Transport Information Services Association) is pleased to announce the first ever recipient of the TISA Achievement Award, Georg Obert, BMW AG Traffic Technology and Traffic Management.

As 2011 marks the inauguration of the TISA Achievement award, the TISA Steering Board and the TISA Awards Committee determined that it should be given, not just for contributions over the last 12 months, but for contributions to TISA since its founding three years ago. As described by Bev Marks, Executive Director of TISA, “the Award recognises a consistent achievement and support of TISA activities throughout our existence.” Candidates were judged on criteria such as the ideas contributed, document preparation work and meeting attendance among other, more general aspects of TISAs work.

Georg Obert was unanimously chosen by the Awards Committee in recognition of his diligent work in contributing to building TISA into the significant trade association it is today.

Described by Jonathan Burr, TISA President, as “the personality for TISA TMC [Traffic Message Channel]” and its “driving force”, Georg has been an expert in TMC for 15 years. He is integral to the TISA organisation in its relationships with a wide range of service providers. He also has detailed technical knowledge and is responsible for the first TPEG (Transport Protocol Experts Group) business model.

The TISA Awards Committee (TAC) will give more awards in the future to recognise outstanding achievement. Specifically, they will be looking at awards geared towards recognising technology education that spreads the TISA message to a younger generation.

“The TAC firmly believes that the 2011 recipient of the TISA Award completely deserves recognition – especially for early leadership which led to TISAs formation and for diligence in ensuring that TISA has become a significant trade association, that is now clearly seen as of worldwide importance. The Award recognises a consistent achievement and support of TISA activities throughout our existence.” – Bev Marks, Executive Director, TISA

Public Private Partnership boosts deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems in Europe

ERTICO - ITS Europe, a public-private partnership of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) European stakeholders held a series of high-level workshops under the theme of “Bringing Intelligence into Mobility – Deployment challenges”, as part of its annual Forum, held in Brussels on 15 June 2010.

The Forum explored the current status and ambitions of ITS as seen by differing stakeholder groups – service providers, telecom operators, infrastructure providers, manufacturers, the public sector and user groups. High level representatives from each stakeholder group, as well as representatives from the European institutions and international organisations, presented and discussed state of the art ITS services and future deployment plans up to 2020.

Specific topics explored in depth included the role of ITS in the electrification of vehicles, the impact of the cellular revolution on ITS and how ITS deployment is driven by competition.

The Forum showed that there are already many ITS services deployed in Europe, improving road safety, reducing congestion and supporting the driver. All the public and private stakeholders present showed their enthusiasm and commitment to advancing ITS to where it will provide all the necessary information to the traveller to ensure safe, comfortable, predictable and environmental journeys.

Dr Prof. Gunter Zimmermeyer, Chairman of the ERTICO Board, underlined the importance of competition in ITS deployment. “Whereas cooperation to ensure interoperability and resilience is necessary at the research stage, deployment will be driven by companies competing to offer the best service at the best price. ITS will not only make transport greener and safer, but also provide a competitive edge for industry.”

Mr Jean-Eric Paquet, Director, DG MOVE, presented the current status of the ITS Action Plan and the associated ITS Directive: "The ITS Action Plan outlines the priority areas and related measures for accelerating and coordinating the deployment of ITS solutions across the European Union, and to ensure seamless ITS services for European citizens. The European Union will meet the challenge of providing the necessary environment for the successful deployment of ITS."

Mrs Zita Gurmai, MEP, noted that “…ITS contributes to European competitiveness by creating valuable export goods, technologies and services. I consider our cooperation with ERTICO among one of my most fruitful professional relationships… there are only a few organisations working in such a close relationship with the European decision making bodies.”

There was agreement that the ITS community can only successfully move ITS forward if it works together in partnership We stand at the threshold of a world where connected transport modes contribute to zero accidents, zero delays, reduced impact on the environment and fully informed people, where services are affordable and seamless, privacy is respected and security ensured.

NOTES TO THE EDITOR:

About ERTICO – ITS Europe:

ERTICO – ITS Europe represents the interests and expertise of around 100 Partners involved in providing Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS).
Innovative technologies to achieve up to 20% reduction in road transport fuel consumption

Date: 07 June 2010

The 3-year European funded research project eCoMove will develop, test and evaluate a number of ‘green’ transport technologies and applications that will potentially deliver up to 20% CO2 emissions reductions. The eCoMove vision is that of the “perfect eco-driver” travelling through the “perfectly eco-managed” road network. The project will be using the state of the art vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication technologies (so called cooperative systems), to integrate for the first time systems to support “eco-driving” with those for “eco-traffic management”.

Road transport alone is responsible for some 70% of all transport greenhouse gas emissions that in turn make up around 20% of global emissions. The project’s core concept is that a combination of cooperative applications for eco-driving, eco-freight and logistics and eco-traffic management can – for any given trip by a particular vehicle – help to approach the theoretical least possible fuel consumption; without compromising the quality of mobility of people and goods.
Jean Charles Pandazis, Coordinator of the project says: “In reality today, vehicles, drivers and traffic management systems fall short of this ideal, and much fuel is wasted leading to unnecessary CO2 emission.”

Eco-driving support, fuel-optimised navigation and energy-efficient traffic control are the three pillars of eCoMove, which corresponds to the three main causes of energy waste. The project will act on: drivers’ behaviour, route choice and road network management.

In other words, eCoMove will find solutions to help drivers to drive more fuel efficient, to find the “greenest” route and with the best chance of driving through traffic lights on green. Road operators will be allowed to adapt traffic signal parameters and apply other measures to balance the traffic so that vehicles on the network consume the least possible fuel.
Last but not least, the system allows for incentives or other advantages, like cash eco bonuses or priority in traffic, to encourage green driving.

While eco-driving and traffic management measures already exist, the innovation relies in applying cooperative ICTs (information & Communication Technologies) providing real time information, to generate a substantial and sustainable impact.

Mobility 2.0 live at Cooperative Mobility Showcase 2010

Date: 24 March 2010

The Cooperative Mobility Showcase 2010 features the world’s largest most varied and extensive demonstrations of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication technologies and applications, held in and around Amsterdam 23-26 March 2010. The Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems (CVIS) Project is one of Europe’s flagship projects for cooperative mobility, providing a universal platform for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication and services. Co-financed by the EU’s Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, CVIS brings together over 60 leading industrial, government, operator and research organisations from across Europe.

Watch the CVIS video news release!

CVIS is co-organiser with the SAFESPOT and COOPERS projects of this unique event that presents the final results of Europe’s cooperative systems research programme. The Showcase combines on-road demonstrations, a dedicated conference and an exhibition in its own hall, all at Amsterdam RAI.

What is Cooperative Mobility? It means the interconnection of vehicles and infrastructure, to create and share new kinds of information, leading to a better cooperation amongst drivers, vehicles and roadside systems. This will have profound effects on the safety and efficiency of the road network, on environmental impact and will stimulate a wave of innovative applications for driver assistance and comfort.

A key achievement of CVIS is its flexible and open implementation platform and accompanying development tools. Using this universal solution anyone can develop and market a CVIS compatible application, allowing for truly innovative products and services. CVIS demonstrates in Amsterdam an “ITS App Store” with over 25 applications and services for the driver, for road operators and traffic managers and for commercial vehicle operators.

Visitors to Amsterdam can take a ride in one of the fleet of demonstration minivans, to experience applications such as “virtual VMS”, or traffic sign messages on the dashboard; online parking space availability and reservation; wrong-way driver detection and warning; green light speed advice; and social networking for drivers and ride-share passengers. COOPERS applications also on show during the public road tour include accident and roadworks warning and lane utilisation message.

An off-road safety demonstration area features four zones where advanced cooperative safety applications developed by SAFESPOT are on show including frontal collision and slippery road warnings; safe following distance and lane change warnings; and cooperative intersection safety systems.

The Cooperative Traffic Management Centre of the future is on show in Hall 9 at Amsterdam RAI. Here visitors can see strategic routing, virtual VMS and advanced vehicle and traffic monitoring as they will appear to a traffic manager in the year 2020.

The Showcase Conference opens on 24 March with introductions from European Commissioner for Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes, Dutch Secretary General of Rijkswaterstaat Siebe Riedtra and Elisabeth Post, North-Holland Provincial Deputy. Three executive round tables explore the dialogue amongst elected policy makers, industry solution providers and users’ representatives. Thursday 25 March is an “A to Z” of the key results from CVIS, SAFESPOT and COOPERS projects, from the latest vehicle communication technologies to lessons learned from real life trials on project test sites across Europe. On Friday 25 March the Showcase concludes with executive sessions looking at the long-range vision of cooperative mobility and how to overcome the practical challenges to bring these systems into the market and onto the roads of Europe.

Paul Kompfner, CVIS Coordinator, says, “Our goal was ambitious: to prepare the foundations for a safer, more efficient and sustainable mobility, enabled by innovative solutions for vehicle-infrastructure communication and cooperation. We hope visitors will come away from the Showcase with their own vision of how we can achieve a better future in the transport and travel domain, and with the intention to work together to realize that vision.”

Halmstad University wins the CVIS Application Innovation Contest

Kristofer Lidstroem from Halmstad University in Sweden claimed the top prize in the final of the CVIS Application Innovation Contest 2009 which was held at the 16th ITS World Congress in Stockholm. The second prize was taken by Lodgon, Belgium and the two third prizes were given to Ygomi and CIT. The companies were awarded €20,000, €15,000 and €7,500 respectively.

Halmstad University took gold with a pedestrian safety system where the vehicle informs the intelligent intersection when the system detects that the driver is behaving unpredictably. Both driver and pedestrian are warned either through the HMI displays in the car or on a mobile phone, or by altering traffic light phases. The driver behaviour is compared to reference models implemented using a potential field approach.

Lodgon’s silver winning Vehicle Social Networking (VSN) application is a community service where the vehicle interacts with the local environment and the public internet for exchanging personal and location relevant information within a community of peers. Rather than checking all issue by hand, the community can participate in identifying, verifying and commenting on the reported issues. The system would also allow for location advertising to be inserted with a relevant context.
The two winning applications come from companies that are not belonging to the CVIS consortium and show the range of applications CVIS is supporting beyond the efficiency and support of mobility. The CVIS concept can be extended to safety and infotainment applications. Halmstad University’s pedestrian crossing warning could largely increase safety for vulnerable users such as pedestrians and bicycle drivers. Lodgon’s Vehicle Social Networking provides a community service based on vehicle to vehicle communications.

Ygomi/Connexis took the bronze prize for the evolving vehicle assistant, an info-mobility service where parking lots could be points of interest. The service aims at optimizing the travel and mobility experience of a driver, evolving in an urban and sub-urban environment. Cork Institute of Technologies took the bronze prize by applying agent technology to cooperative systems and into the vehicular environment. The Commercial Vehicular Agent System (CVAS) is a framework which allows users in a vehicular environment to access location aware trust based services.

The CVIS application innovation contest, which was launched in January 2009, aimed to assess the ability of companies external to the project to develop CVIS-compliant services. A large number of high-quality concepts were submitted. The best four submissions were invited to demonstrate their applications on the European Commission stand during the ITS World Congress in Stockholm.

After much deliberation the jury of CVIS experts form Daimler, Swedish Road Administration and Telecom Italy selected the finalists. The gold, silver and bronze applications were selected by the Congress visitors. The prizes were awarded in a ceremony presided by Juhani Jaaskelainen, Head of Transport, EC Directorate-General Information Society and Media.

With a budget of over €40 million and a consortium of over 60 leading industrial, public and academic organisations, CVIS will complete its 4-year programme in early 2010. CVIS is coordinated by ERTICO-ITS Europe.

CVIS aims to design, develop and test the technologies needed to allow cars to communicate with each other and with the nearby roadside infrastructure. CVIS’ achievements will be applied in test sites in seven countries across Europe, to increase road safety and efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of road transport.

CVIS Application Innovation Contest.
In order to demonstrate the true openness of its innovative architecture, the EU-supported CVIS Integrated Project has published an Application Submission Contest (ASC). The purpose of this contest is to make the ITS community aware of the CVIS concept and demonstrate its possibilities by selecting the most promising applications and support the contest-winning teams to develop and demonstrate their applications in a cooperative systems test bed in Germany, France, Italy, UK, Sweden, Netherlands and Belgium.

Halmstad University is a university which crosses boundaries - for the development of organisations, products and quality of life.
Viajeo: towards efficient travel and transport planning

Supported by the European Commission the project was officially launched on 25 September at the ITS World Congress in Stockholm, Sweden. Coordinated by ERTICO – ITS Europe, the project brings together various stakeholders who decided to join their forces under the Viajeo umbrella for a period of 36 months. They will design, demonstrate and implement an open platform to collect and process data for transport planning and travel information in cities in Europe, China and Brazil.

An increasing number of cities and urban areas have to cope with serious demands of their transportation systems which require an effective planning of public transport, good management of urban traffic and provision of a wide range of traveller information services.

Viajeo aims to create, demonstrate and validate an open platform which will enable information exchange and sharing among various stakeholders. This open platform will be able to facilitate data exchange, centralise process data from various sources, thus improving traveller information services, support transport management and more sustainable transport and city planning. “With the fast development of new data collection and dissemination technologies, integration of new data sources and services is becoming a real challenge for data management strategies; therefore Viajeo’s objective is to offer a comprehensive solution to enhance efficiency of data collection and usage, thus improving overall urban transport services and planning”, says Patrick Mercier-Handisyde, Viajeo’s European Commission Project Officer.

The demonstrations are planned to start from 2010 in a number of selected cities: Athens, São Paulo, Beijing and Shanghai, which have been carefully chosen to ensure they can become national role models. “We hope that the successful results of the demonstration cities will be extended to other cities in these countries or even to other countries in the respective continents”, states Vincent Blervaque, ERTICO’s Director of Development and Deployment.

The implementation of this open platform in Europe and in its partner countries China and Brazil is expected to contribute to a more inclusive urban transport system with better access for all travellers, increased acceptance and take up of new urban transport solutions and technologies, to reduce pollution from road transport and to improve energy efficiency as well as safety in urban mobility. Viajeo’s partners believe that informed travellers, transport operators and city planners, who are given comprehensive and high-quality information, will actively help reduce congestion and negative environmental impact in urban areas.

Viajeo involves end users, traffic managers, public authorities, transport operators, equipment manufacturers, service providers, application and service developers, content owners and providers and research organisations. This multi-sector approach will allow for a comprehensive social, economical and environmental assessment of the implementation of the Viajeo’s open platform.

For more information about the project please contact:

Project information – Irina Silva, Project Assistant; Tel: +32 2 400 07 30; Email: i.silva@mail.ertico.com

Press enquiries – Alina Cornea, Communications Officer; Tel; +32 2 400 07 27; Email: a.cornea@mail.ertico.com

European “CVIS” Project Shows the Cooperative Way to Mobility

CVIS, European flagship project for Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems, showcased its first achievements at the Stockholm ITS World Congress, including the latest technology and application development for cooperative mobility, and Europe’s first universal open platform for vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and services.

The CVIS project has designed, developed and is testing novel technologies to enable drivers to interact directly with local traffic management systems, and receive recommendations on the best route to their destination, thus helping to reduce road congestion. This project, co-funded by the European Union and coordinated by ERTICO - ITS Europe, has created a universal communication unit for both in-vehicle and roadside use, featuring multiple communication interfaces, innovative positioning techniques and tools for the development of application software.

The CVIS technologies and applications developed over the last years are now in the testing phase at validation sites across Europe. Today in Stockholm, CVIS is presenting the world’s most extensive demonstration of vehicle-infrastructure communication, applications and services. One demonstration will show how a seamless internet connection is maintained while hopping between a 3G/UMTS cellular network and short- and medium-range communications based on mobile wireless LAN. This demonstration will use the newly-reserved European ITS band around 5.9 GHz, commonly called “DSRC” (Dedicated Short Range Communication). A smooth handover between infrared and 3G cellular communication will also be shown.

Other demonstrations will feature enhanced positioning, real-time maps and location referencing. This technology can provide high-precision positioning solutions, accurate to under one meter. Applied in a car, such technology could help the driver to stay in lane, and would greatly improve the accuracy of safety systems such as lane departure warning.

To illustrate the unlimited potential for future cooperative applications and services, a CVIS “Public Road Tour” will take visitors on a 15-minute circuit around the World Congress venue, where they can see the following applications in real life: Road User Charging, Intermodal Traveller, Access to Green Zones, Danger Wrong Way Driver, Carpool Matcher, Children on the Road Warning, Local Commercial Advertisement and Parking Space Booking.

The potential of cooperative mobility is also illustrated during the ITS World Congress through a cooperative systems play at the Demonstration Theatre where the audience can see how different stakeholders can best collaborate to improve traffic safety and efficiency, and reduce environmental impact.

Visitors should also drop in on the joint CVIS-SAFESPOT exhibit on the European Commission stand in Stockholm. Here they will be able to see a truck that visitors can drive in a simulated world, a traffic light powering the cooperative road of the future, and a video wall explaining cooperative applications and technologies.

Innovative new services can be easily designed and developed using the CVIS technology platform. As proof, on Thursday 24 September at 15:30 the winners will be announced of the CVIS Application Innovation Contest. Prizes will be awarded to the four finalists who have developed applications as diverse as Multi-modal Vehicle Social Networking, Pedestrian Crossing Warning, Evolutive Vehicle Assistant/Eco-driving and Commercial Vehicle Agent System.

Following more than three years of development and testing, the Stockholm ITS World Congress marks the launch of the CVIS platform for use by other projects needing an adaptable development prototype for both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and/or vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) applications. Cooperation agreements are in place or preparation with over ten project and commercial users external to the CVIS consortium.

As well as preparing the technologies and applications for demonstrations during 2009 and 2010, the CVIS consortium has also been helping prepare the way for deployment. As CVIS Coordinator Paul Kompfner of ERTICO says, “the deployment of cooperative technologies holds the promise of many new benefits. But to enable widespread and rapid deployment we need first to overcome some barriers. Users will need to find cooperative mobility services useful, affordable and user-friendly, and not threatening. There needs to be a positive business case for all investors, both public and private. Standards need to be in place to ensure interoperability, and services must be widely available across Europe. Lastly, key stakeholders need to agree on a common deployment roadmap to avoid the “chicken-egg” problem of “who goes first…”

CVIS marks the start of a new era, when cooperative mobility systems deployment will bring fewer traffic accidents, lower congestion delays and costs, and reduced fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. For a preview, join us in Stockholm to catch a glimpse of this future – come and experience “CVIS Live!”

Notes to the editor
---------------------------------------------------------

About ERTICO – ITS Europe
ERTICO – ITS Europe, a multi-sector partnership dedicated to the development and deployment of intelligent transportation systems and services (ITS). ERTICO supports the development and deployment of ITS solutions to achieve safe, efficient, clean, secure and affordable cooperative mobility in the EU and beyond.

About the CVIS (Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure System) project
CVIS is an integrated R&D project co-funded by the European Union under the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) priority of the 6th Framework Programme for Research.

WLAN 802.11p provides wireless access for cars, trucks and trains and was developed to support intelligent transport systems. This includes data exchange between high-speed vehicles and between the vehicles and the roadside infrastructure in the licensed ITS band of 5.9 GHz (5.85-5.925 GHz).

European Commission decision on ITS radio frequency allocation
The EU Commission decided last August 2008 to allocate a single radio frequency band for vehicle communication systems across Europe (5.9 GHz).They are based on wireless communication technology and allow cars to 'talk' to other cars and to the road infrastructure providers.

Dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) are one-way or two-way short- to medium-range wireless communication channels specifically designed for automotive use and a corresponding set of protocols and standards. It offers communication between the vehicle and roadside equipment. It is a sub-set of the RFID-technology. This technology for ITS applications is working in the 5.9 GHz band (U.S.) or 5.8 GHz band (Japan, Europe). Former standard used the 915 MHz band.Currently its main use in Europe and Japan is in electronic toll collection. DSRC systems in Europe, Japan and U.S. are not, at the present moment, compatible.

3G is the third generation of standards and technology that is based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of standards. 3G networks enable network operators to offer users
a wider range of more advanced services that include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment. 3G networks are wide-area cellular telephone networks that evolved to incorporate high-speed Internet access and video telephony.

UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service) is a third-generation (3G) broadband, packet-based transmission of text, digitized voice, video, and multimedia at data rates up to 2 megabits per second (Mbps). UMTS offers a consistent set of services to mobile computer and phone users, no matter where they are located in the world. UMTS is based on the Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication standard.

Intelligent vehicles tested on European roads

Date: 24 September 2009

As a further demonstration of the depth of its commitment to tackling today’s challenges of increased demand for mobility, the automotive industry has joined forces with various universities, research centres and other stakeholders, in a smart drive to test eight different high-tech intelligent in-vehicle technologies on real roads, with real drivers.

In the context of euroFOT, a European-wide research project, 28 organisations have committed to scientifically test and assess the impact of eight advanced driver assistance systems on safety, efficiency and driver comfort. This collaborative research project is supported by European funds from the DG Information Society and Media.

Both lateral and longitudinal control systems will be tested: systems that give warnings to the driver on potential side- and front-end collisions. Also, other advanced in-vehicle systems such as Curve Speed Warning, Fuel Efficiency Adviser and the Human machine interaction with navigation systems will be tested.

Beginning in 2010, no less than 1000 vehicles from various European vehicle brands equipped with various intelligent in-vehicle systems will drive around Europe for approximately one year. These intelligent vehicles will collect data that should deliver answers with regards to the impacts that these systems have on safety, efficiency and driver comfort.

Speaking at the ITS World Congress for Intelligent Transport Systems, Aria Etemad, Project coordinator of euroFOT from Ford, said “This is the first-of-its-kind- large-scale field operational test that is carried out across brands in Europe.”

Maxime Flament from ERTICO - ITS Europe, responsible for the coordination of the various vehicle centres said: “Car dealers and fleet owners across Europe are currently recruiting the drivers that will take part in this experiment. At the same time, the vehicle operation centres are getting ready to prepare each vehicle for a 1-year long advanced data collection.”

The euroFOT project is expected to raise awareness and provide indications based on scientific data about real benefits of these existing intelligent in-vehicle systems. The results of the field test will also contribute to better and informed decision making.

Further information

This week, at the World Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems in Stockholm, the specific plans and methodology used for the euroFOT project will be presented by various researchers taking part in this first of its kind, large-scale European field test.

• Where? At the World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems and Services, Stockholm International Fairs.
• What? Special interest Session 29: European Large-scale field Operational test on active safety systems, first results
• When? 16:00- 17:30.

ERTICO-ITS Workshops “Bringing Intelligence into Mobility”

Date: 15 June 2009

ERTICO-ITS Europe, a public -private partnership organisation of Intelligent Transportation Systems stakeholders across Europe held its General Assembly and a series of high level ITS workshops on 11- 12 June 2009 in the Château du Lac, Genval, Belgium.

The workshops featured prestigious guest speakers representing the European Commission and other international organisations, including Jack Short Secretary General of the International Transport Forum. One of the main goals of the workshops was to present and discuss current and future activities by the European Commission, to ensure the effective and coordinated deployment of ITS systems and services to bring intelligence into mobility. The ERTICO partnership was impressed by the proposed activities and gave a clear commitment for active support.

Dr. Prof. Gunter Zimmermeyer, newly elected Chairman of the Board commented: “I am honoured and proud to take over the responsibilities of Mrs. Monica Sundström to drive the future of ITS in Europe. I strongly believe that in these challenging times, ITS represents the opportunity to drive forward our businesses and our economy. In this context, all stakeholders from all modes of transport should cooperate together to achieve an optimal and sustainable use of all transport modes.”

Mr. Thierry Van der Pyl, Director at the European Commission Directorate General for Information Society and Media, emphasised the need to work together and focus on the deployment of ITS systems and services: “Public-private partnerships will be a central element of the Economic Recovery Plan proposed by the European Commission. We all need to work together to push deployment. Every Member State needs to include ITS as a key component of all infrastructure developments.”

Mr. Fotis Karamitsos, Director at the European Commission Directorate General for Transport presented the current status of the ITS-Action Plan and its associated Directive.

Mr. Karamitsos explained: “Despite 20 years of efforts in R&D, obstacles to large deployment and use of ITS for road in Europe still exist. The current business model for ITS deployment based on private initiatives has clearly shown its limitations. We need an integrated Community action combining legal action, standardisation and financial support. This approach has been implemented with success in other transport modes : ERTMS in rail , VTMIS in maritime and RIS in inland waterways. The ITS Action Plan and Directive Proposal constitute jointly today's EU response to the challenge of accelerating the coordinated deployment of ITS in road transport."

In the context of the ITS Action Plan and the EasyWay programme, ERTICO and its partners are invited to contribute to the expert groups, specific actions, consultations and will have a role in the newly established ITS Advisory Group.

Mr. Andras Siegler, Director at the European Commission Directorate General for Research emphasised the continuous need of advancing research in ITS: “ the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development for Road Transport currently puts a priority on sustainable urban mobility. As part of the Green Car Initiative, one of the focus areas for future opportunities in FP7 will be on the electrification of road and urban transport. In this context, I believe that mobility will be substantially transformed. ”

Mr. Hermann Meyer, CEO of ERTICO-ITS Europe presented the vision, mission, strategy and goals of the ERTICO-ITS Europe network: “ERTICO – ITS Europe is bringing intelligence into mobility for people and goods across Europe. We are working together in a public-private partnership towards zero accidents, zero delays, reduced impact on the environment and fully informed people, where services are affordable and seamless, privacy is respected and security is ensured.”

NOTES TO THE EDITOR:

Time for greener moving. In-Time goes public!

Date: 25 January 2011

The In-Time launch event took place on 25 January 2010 in Vienna, Austria. High level participants from industry and service providers and city and regional representatives had the opportunity to critically examine the In-Time project’s achievements and aims, the technical solutions to be deployed and the progress and models of the six in-Time Pilot cities - Brno, Bucharest, Florence, Munich, Oslo and Vienna.

The event opened with an introduction from Bernhard Engleder (City of Vienna) and a project overview from Martin Boehm (Project Coordinator, AustriaTech). Participants then had the opportunity to visit the In-Time demonstration area, where In-Time project partners were on hand to explain and answer questions on their contributions to the project.

Bernhard Engleder (City of Vienna) underlined that “…cooperation with the In-Time project is very important for a city like Vienna enabling us to offer high level traffic information service in the Vienna Region to all…”

Martin Boehm (Project Coordinator, AustriaTech) said, “The extensive developments of the last 1.5 years have borne fruit for all In-Time project partners. We can now start the important pilot phase that will contribute to the successful realisation and continuation of In-Time services.”

The In-Time project was then described and discussed in three sessions. The first session focussed on the In-Time concept and its expected impacts. The second delved into the technical architecture and end user solutions from the three In-Time Traveller Information Service Providers. Finally, the third session examined how interested public authorities and companies can become involved in the In-Time project.

Bernhard Engleder (City of Vienna) noted that “The next challenge will be to connect the regions throughout Europe and to set common standards for data quality, services and usability. In this context, In-Time is a very important next step and can be called an outstanding best practice example for innovative traffic services and transnational cooperation.”

Finally, Martin Boehm Project Coordinator, AustriaTech) wrapped up proceedings, “In-Time will give users the unique possibility to optimise their travel routes in cities and to change their travel habits in a more environmental friendly way without any effort. This service could not only enhance the user´s comfort in travelling, but also help to achieve goals like CO2 reduction or the better use of capacity in transport in urban areas.”

Note to the editor:

In-Time will pilot and validate an innovative pan-European approach to Real Time Traffic and Travel Information (RTTI) services. The reliable and real-time delivery of these services to the individual traveller and to traffic management centres is likely to reduce drastically energy consumption in urban areas, across different modes of transport. The traveller is expected to change his travel behaviour according to the information he/she receives, opting for the most efficient and quickest modes for his/her travel journey.

In-Time is a Policy Support Programme supported by the European Commission Seventh Framework programme of Information Society Technologies. In-Time is a response to the European ICT PSP second call for proposals 2008, addressing Objective 2.2 ICT - for adaptive urban transport management infrastructure and services.

Note to the Editor:
About ITS Congresses
To share knowledge and experience within the ITS community is seen as a must in the development and implementation of ITS technologies. In that regard, European and World Congresses provide the ideal opportunity for all players of the ITS world to come together and make the necessary contacts to help move initiatives forward. Over the years, they have also received the highest support throughout the ITS world from government, industry and other organisations.

ERTICO – ITS Europe, ITS America and ITS Japan work closely together in the preparation of the annual ITS World Congress and Exhibition attracting over 8000 people. Each year the event takes place in a different region, and it is held in Europe every third year. Valuable support is also provided by the host region, including by the national ITS association of the country. European ITS Congresses that bring together over 1500 people are organised by ERTICO – ITS Europe in years when there is not an ITS World Congress in Europe. In 2012, the World ITS Congress will take place in Vienna, Austria from 22 to 26 October.
Orlando: www.itsworldcongress.org
Vienna: http://2012.itsworldcongress.com/content/

About ITS and ERTICO
ERTICO – ITS Europe is a multi-sector, public/private partnership pursuing the development and deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS). We connect public authorities, industry players, infrastructure operators, users, national ITS associations and other organisations together and work to bring “Intelligence into Mobility”.

The ERTICO work programme focuses on initiatives to improve road safety, security and network efficiency whilst taking into account measures to reduce environmental impact. Our vision is of a future transport system working towards zero accidents, zero delays and fully informed people, where services are affordable and seamless, the environment is protected, privacy is respected and security is provided.

Bordeaux, 8 December 2011. Today, ERTICO - ITS Europe and TOPOS AQUITAINE signed the contract for the ITS World Congress 2015 at the Metro'num event. ITS World Congresses are the year's première event on ITS, representing a unique opportunity for showcasing and experiencing new technologies, networking and discussing and evaluating the latest developments.

Alain Rousset, President of Bordeaux Region, and founding member of "TOPOS AQUITAINE", the satellite application cluster of Aquitaine and Anne Marie Keiser, Vice President of the Conseil general de Gironde and President of Gironde Numerique, witnessed André Perpey, President of TOPOS and Gunter Zimmermeyer, ERTICO Chairman, sign the agreement to host the 22nd ITS World Congress in Bordeaux in 2015, under the theme "More ITS for greener mobility".

Bordeaux has been an ITS pioneer since the 1980s and is home to several ITS research centres - ensuring a full and varied technical visit programme. Moreover, Bordeaux is a green city, offering eco-friendly forms of multi-modal transport. The 2015 ITS World Congress will focus on how mobility can be "greened" through the deployment of ITS solutions. The ITS possibilities and applications of Galileo will also be demonstrated in real life situations.

In addition to the being in one of the world's most famous wine producing regions, Bordeaux is also a most convivial and beautiful city - the old town is on the UNESCO World Heritage List - perfect for the numerous technical demonstrations and networking events planned for Bordeaux 2015!

Gunter Zimmermeyer, ERTICO Chairman, said, "With a superb location and a strong transport industry, dedicated political and industry support, I believe Bordeaux will make the ITS Congress a great success. There is a lot of work ahead, but I am convinced that the 2015 ITS World Congress in Bordeaux will be another milestone towards deployment of ITS not only in Europe but worldwide."

Whether discussing the latest ITS developments with 3000 of your peers at the 200+ Congress sessions, or seeing the cutting edge of ITS from 300 companies at the exhibition area, or trying out it all out for yourself in the demonstration area, or meeting and networking with the world's greatest gathering of ITS specialists, government and industry representatives and journalists, the 2015 ITS World Congress will be unmissable!

ERTICO also welcomes Bordeaux Aquitaine as a new ERTICO Partner.
