Public-private cooperation on digital maps pays off

The ROSATTE workshop took place in Paris on 17 September, and was well attended by experts in the field representing OEMs, industry, public authorities and road administrations.

ROSATTE aims to establish an infrastructure for road safety-relevant data to be transmitted in a reliable, efficient, and high-quality way from public authorities to information providers. The main challenge addressed by the project is the divergence within Europe regarding data providers, data formats, and data quality.
During the workshop, attendees showed a strong interest in the project’s activities, as ROSATTE’s results will be key for the further development of ADAS applications. Also, ROSATTE is the first project in the field of digital maps with a genuine cooperation between private and public sector, an aspect widely appreciated by participants.

Ms Pascale Buch, the French Deputy Interministerial Delegate for Road Safety, gave a speech, emphasising the importance of ROSATTE at the European level. The project could significantly reduce the number of road fatalities, as drivers would be given a chance to communicate with their cars in a more efficient and reliable way, she said.  Ms Buch concluded that the cooperation between the public and private sectors on the project were unique in this field and would be mutually beneficial.
During the panel session, a number of interesting points were covered in a fruitful discussion, such as the need for attributes from the OEM's point of view, aspects related to quality, and methods used for collecting input from the different member states.

In addition to the consortium presentations, there were a number of very interesting presentations by external participants, starting with Jun Shibata from the Japanese Digital Road Map Association, who gave an insight into the Japanese system. Mr Jacques Ehrlich from LIVIC described the ROSATTE-related COSAL project in detail, and Mr Hamish Keith presented related activities in London.

Following an insightful workshop, the ROSATTE team will continue to work hard on defining the specifications for the infrastructure, as well as elaborating solutions to overcome the barriers related to the divergence of data providers, data formats and data quality.
