The Intelligent Car Initiative

The Intelligent Car Initiative is a policy framework created by the European Commission in order to unleash the potential of ICT to tackle current transport issues. Following on from the i2010 initiative, it is based on the Commission’s 2006 communication “Raising awareness of ICT for smarter, safer and cleaner vehicles”, which identified targeted actions to raise awareness among users of this technology, and proposed suitable structures in order to coordinate the activities of stakeholders.

Its objective is to improve road safety in the EU, to cut back the number of road fatalities and accidents, to decrease the number of traffic jams, and to reduce fuel consumption and road transport's CO² emissions.

The Intelligent car initiative is composed of twelve specific actions in three “pillars”: coordination and support of the work of the relevant stakeholders through the eSafety Forum; R&D; and awareness raising actions.

In 2007, the Commission, in its first review of the Intelligent Car Initiative, highlighted 15 specific actions, focussing on the eCall initiative, electronic stabilisation control, “clean” mobility and the safe fixing, use and standardisation of in-car nomadic devises.
